Abstract

This book focuses on the European Union as an actor involved in the transnational Kurdish issue covering Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. It demonstrates that, instead of being simply a humanitarian actor in the issue, the EU has considered its bilateral interests with the four states in question as well as its extent of acceptance in approaching the Kurdish issue. It has combined its traditional humanitarian/normative consideration with its geopolitical interests in relation to strategies related to the four states. This book provides a unique perspective on the EU as an actor in the Kurdish issue and from a wider perspective, it provides interesting insights into the EU’s interactions with geopolitics, which has become the topic of a lively scholarly debate in recent years. The book is a resource for researchers and students studying the European Union as a global actor, and for governmental or non-governmental professionals dealing directly with, or having interest in, the EU and/or Kurdish affairs. .

Abstract

The formation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), agreed upon at the Fourth ASEAN Summit in January 1992, reflects both developments within ASEAN and the changing international economic and political environment. Rapid industrialization in all the ASEAN countries has given rise to greater intra-ASEAN trade. Such trade has also become more complementary than competitive. In the international sphere, the emergence of regional trading blocs such as the Single European Market (SEM) and the recently concluded North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have also had a major impact on ASEAN's perceptions of a global trading system. Fears of trade and investment diversion, coupled with increasing competition for foreign direct investments, have forced ASEAN to forge closer economic ties amongst its members. This timely volume focuses on the issues concerning the practical aspects of implementation of AFTA, and the ways and means of bringing AFTA to fruition within the 15 year frame. In addition, broader global and regional issues are analysed to provide a more comprehensive discussion of the prospects and problems of AFTA.

Abstract

Presently, ASEAN stands ready to make a major step towards economic integration. This book looks at the issues involved in moving ASEAN towards a free trade area. It examines some indicators of gains and costs of integration and presents two quantitative analyses of the potential effects of integration on growth and trade in the region. The first, a partial equilibrium analysis, provides a disaggregated view of changes in production and trade patterns that could occur with integration. The second, a macroeconometric analysis, is able to capture general equilibrium effects and identifies the effects of integration on overall economic growth. These two analyses represent the first systematic, quantitative studies of intra-ASEAN trade.

Abstract

This book analyzes the recent development paths pursued by progressive governments in Argentina and Brazil, namely deindustrialization and reprimarization, and the social and environmental consequences thereof. Two major issues which extend beyond Latin America are: the expansion of genetically modified crops and agrotoxics and the concern for global food security and sovereignty; second, how reprimarization, associated with mining, oil, soy and cattle, has been key in leading to the risk of desertification in the Argentine pampas and also causing deforestation in the Amazon Rain forest, described as the lungs of the planet, and thus has major implications for climate change for the planet as a whole. A key part of understanding the trajectories in both Argentina and Brazil has been the role played by international institutions, especially the IMF and WTO, and also the ever-growing hegemony of transnational corporations in the global economy and significantly limiting the possibilities of genuine development for local populations. This book also engages with a number of theoretical issues: development and dependency in the periphery: neoliberal globalization, accumulation by dispossession, ecological and environmental debates and the role of extractivism and rent. This book is aimed for both academics, activists and those politically motivated to analyze, understand and push for social change from a critical perspective, and also those interested in a radical analysis of paths of development, dependency and socioenvironmental issues in Latin America today. Paul Cooney is a political economist, who received his Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research in 1990. He has recently taught at the UFPA in the Brazilian Amazon, at the UNGS in Argentina, and is currently a professor at the Catholic University of Quito, Ecuador. In addition to this book, his current research topics are neoliberal globalization in Latin America, and their socio-environmental impacts, and ecological economics. He is currently a member of the URPE Steering Committee and serves on the editorial boards of the following journals: Research in Political Economy, Capitalism, Nature, Socialism, and Revista Ensayos de Economía.

Abstract

This book traces the development and impact of regional economic communities (RECs) in Africa and addresses a timely question: do REC members, and the REC itself, positively influence member states’ behaviors towards other members and more broadly, regionally and continentally due to REC membership? ‘Changing member states’ behaviors’ is measured across three ‘interconnected, fundamental dimensions of societal-systems’ proposed by Marshall and Elzinga Marshall in CSP’s Global Repot 2017. These are i) the persistence of conflict or its counterpoint, achieving peace, ii) fostering democratization and better governance, and iii) achieving socio-economic development and (as proposed by this research, a fourth dimension), iv) being active participants in multilateralism? Is membership in a REC ultimately beneficial to the member and other countries in the region? While there are no clear and obvious – at least, discernible traditional – benefits such as increase in trade (perhaps because Africa’s overall trade relative to the world is about 3 percent), there are other non trade benefits (e.g., decrease in conflict, coercion to take certain actions towards peace and refrain from others, coups and wars) presenting in REC member states. These in/actions, abilities, coercions, exclusions and cooperation instances are outlined and discussed in the book. Stephen M. Magu is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Norfolk State University, USA. Stephen holds a PhD in International Studies (2013, ODU), a Master of Social Work degree (2007, WashU) degree from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree from Kenyatta University (1999, KU).

Abstract

This book describes the history of European integration and the Eurozone, before presenting ways in which the European Union can move forward. Charting integration from before the Second World War, the foundations of the Eurozone are examined to provide insight into the challenges faced by the European Union, including the Global Financial Crisis, over recent decades. The impact of TARGET2 and the European Monetary System are also discussed. This book aims to highlight ways that current challenges to European integration, such as the COVID-19 crisis, environmental degradation, and fiscal debt, can be overcome to promote economic growth and social advancement. It will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in the political economy and European economic policy.
